  • Faith makes the mind unsullied and pure; it casts off pride and is devotion's root. Faith is like a treasure. It is wealth and peace unexcelled, and, like hands, is the chief means of gathering virtue.

When meeting monks and nuns

Atisha Centre works closely with Thubten Shedrup Ling Monastery, whose monks offer us great kindness and support.

When meeting a monk or nun in the course of your visit to Atisha Centre, be relaxed. Greet them as you would a new friend, introduce yourself, be friendly.

It is not appropriate for members of the opposite sex to touch a monk or nun, do not expect to shake hands. A greeting with palms together and slight bow is an appropriate greeting.

Most Western monks and nuns prefer informality; however the correct way to address a member of the Sangha is to call them “Venerable (Name)”. There are protocols for relating to Sangha members during teachings – see Code of conduct and Centre etiquette.

You can visit the monastery and meet with the monks either by appointment or in the afternoon between 2 and 4 pm. Please do not visit during lunchtime 12 – 2.

To make an appointment with one of the monks, please phone 03 54463691.
